Top Informative Articles to Help You Prepare for the Kedarnath Trek

KEDARNATH TREK

Kedarnath is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in India, especially for devotees of Lord Shiva. Located in the Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand, Kedarnath is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and is also a part of the famous Char Dham Yatra. The temple stands at an altitude of about 3,583 meters (11,755 feet) above sea level, surrounded by the majestic snow-covered Himalayan peaks.

Religious Significance

The Kedarnath Temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, who is worshipped here in the form of a "hump-shaped" Jyotirlinga. According to Hindu mythology, the Pandavas from the epic Mahabharata came here to seek forgiveness from Lord Shiva after the Kurukshetra war. It is believed that Lord Shiva hid from them in the form of a bull. When found, he dived into the ground, leaving his hump on the surface at Kedarnath. Other parts of his body appeared in different places, which are now known as the Panch Kedar – Kedarnath, Tungnath, Rudranath, Madmaheshwar, and Kalpeshwar.

  • By Air: The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun, around 238 km from Kedarnath. From there, one can travel by road to Gaurikund.

  • By Train: The nearest railway stations are in Rishikesh and Haridwar. From there, you can take a bus or taxi to reach Gaurikund.

  • By Road: Gaurikund is the last motorable point before Kedarnath. Regular buses and taxis operate from major cities like Haridwar, Rishikesh, and Dehradun.

  • Trek: From Gaurikund, Kedarnath is a 16 km uphill trek. Ponies, palanquins, and helicopter services are also available for those who cannot walk.

Best Time to Visit

Kedarnath Temple opens to pilgrims in the month of April or May (Akshaya Tritiya) and closes around November (after Diwali). The best time to visit is from May to June and September to October. During the monsoon season (July-August), landslides and heavy rain make travel difficult, so it’s best avoided.

Weather and Packing Tips

The weather is cold even in summer, and temperatures drop sharply at night. In winter, the area is covered in snow, and the temple is closed. Always carry warm clothes, raincoats, sturdy shoes, medicines, and a flashlight when visiting.

Accommodation and Food

There are many government and private guesthouses, dharamshalas, and budget hotels available in and around Kedarnath and Gaurikund. Basic food such as rice, dal, roti, and vegetables is available. As it's a religious site, non-vegetarian food and alcohol are not allowed.

Nearby Attractions

  • Bhairavnath Temple – Located on a hill near the Kedarnath Temple, it is dedicated to Bhairav, a fierce form of Lord Shiva believed to protect the region during winter.

  • Vasuki Tal – A glacial lake located 8 km from Kedarnath. It offers mesmerizing views and is ideal for trekking.

  • Gaurikund – A sacred hot spring and the starting point of the Kedarnath trek.

  • Triyuginarayan Temple – Believed to be the place where Lord Shiva and Parvati got married.
